I sometimes wish I was natural

I have said this many times before, but never committed it to paper.  I sometimes wish I was natural.  Both my sisters and my mum is natural, I also have friends who are natural.  When I see bloggers/youtubers like Naputral85, SimplYounique and FusionofCultures, I look at their hair and the styles they do and get a bit of hair envy.  I sometimes wish I could wear a wash and go or do a braid out with volume and lift, but alas, that is not my portion.  I have relaxed hair.  Are we now the minority?  I do believe that the balance is shifting and more and more people are opting to cut off or grow out their chemically processed hair, to embrace their natural curls.

I started my hair journey in 2010, about 6 months after I relaxed my hair.  Prior to that I was natural for about 6 years, and transitioned from relaxed to natural without even realising.  I had just decided to stop relaxing my hair.  Had I known then what I know now, I probably would not have relaxed in 2009/2010 and just stayed natural, learning how to do my hair.  When I was natural, I would go to the hair dressers to get my hair hot-combed every 6 weeks, but found that my hair was thinning, and so I decided to relax to get the straight look without the constant heat.  We live and we learn.

I have now decided, that I am in it for the long haul.  I will try to grow my hair to MBL as a relaxed lady and then, when I become pregnant with my first child, I will transition for about 6 months and then do the big chop. Sounds like a plan to me!

  1. I said the same thing!! I've been relaxed for aboout 5 years now since my senior year in H.S..... I hated being natural! it was mostly because my hair had no curl to it and I played sports and was in the band so when I sweated my hair would revert. But I told myself that I might go natural AFTER I get pregnant with my first baby. I do want to reach my goal as a relaxed head first tho which is between BSL and MBL. Great post! I can definitely relate.

    1. Thanks. I'm glad that someone else can relate. I just had to post it as it is a very real feeling for me.

  2. I do get where you're coming from but in a different way. I'm texturised so I have the thickness I want but my hair is not natural. I'd love to attend some of the meet-ups but nine times out of ten, they are "natural hair meet-ups"... Also, my ends are straighter than the rest of my hair so the cuter twist-out styles don't really work for me unless I use perm rods or flecks. But I will cut them off one day...

    1. I am so with you on these meet ups, they are all natural! It is so frustrating. I just wish there was something for us relaxed, we really seem to be in the minority! On to hair texture. I have thick hair and every time I relax i want it bone straight but it always (besides the most recent touch-up)seems to come out texlaxed - aarrgghh. This is not intentional at all, so I have all different textures going on in my hair making detangling an absolute nightmare.
